A&E WIGAN

Started by: PeterP (11373)

We know doctors are on strike but A&E looked like a war zone today I had to get an ambulance today for my wife and she left our house about 2-00pm and I was told to follow about 2 to 3 hrs later I had a early tea and got to A&E about 5-00 and the waiting room was full, there were people sat on the floor waiting to be seen to. I inquired where my wife was and I found her on a trolley in a corridor along with about30 other patients. She was seen to by a nurse and one doctor visited and she was given food and a drink and made comfortable has possible. I left the hospital at 11-00 and there was no let up in A&E and no sign of a bed on a ward for the wife .It would not surprise me if she is still on a trolley in the morning

I’ve been in hospital all afternoon today. In Spain.
My grandson had an accident and collided with another lad on a bike.
Result, a nasty deep gash just under his left eyeball.
Seen to immediately.
X-rayed, then wait one hour to see if internal bleeding stopped. It did, so fastened up with superglue and plaster strip.
He’ll have a fine black eye in the morning!

I thought they made a walk in centre for minor injuries to take pressure off A&E.

Bambam Leigh has a walk in centre but at Wigan A&E is the 1st port of call. I am still waiting for a phone call to tell me which ward Yvonne is on that is if she is not still in a corridor. I cannot phone the hospital to find out what is happening last time I tried to phone the switchboard I was put in a queue which run into thousands if I remember If no word by dinner will have to go and try to find out what is happening

Just had a phone call from A&E she has been seen by another doctor who wanted to know what had happened before the ambulance was called. She is still on a trolley in a corridor no nearer to getting on a ward

People seem to go to A&E these days for trivial things,it used to to be the last place I ever wanted to go and it still is.It must be a nightmare for the staff to sort out the real genuine emergencies.

They have trained nurses at the door and they decide who stays in the A+E and who walks down to the ' walk in' centre a 100 yds away,

GB thanksIf I do not get any word by tea time I will go to A&E to see Yvonne. Not much point in going any sooner she is asleep most of the time and would not remember me being there. I would only be sat on a uncomfortable chair and that would not do my Sciatica any good.

That's true handsomeminer, half of them should go doctors or take a couple of painkillers, it's out of order wasting time for people who are really sick.

Cheers Tim About 5 years ago she collapsed and was admitted to hospital she was on the High Dependency Unit for 3 days then moved onto the Stroke Unit for a couple of days . Prognosis was a viral infection then. Will ask at afternoon visiting if I don't get a phone call before then. Her right leg is swollen and she has been told it is water retention so maybe what is wrong with her is tied in with that Oops Thank you Bambam for your post

PeterP I pray for the best of for your wife and yourself. I can vouch for the mess at A & E having just been a patient there. I was in for nearly 12 hours and the place looked like a disaster zone. One simple step would be to limit the visitors to a max of 1 per patient. There were patients in there with perhaps 4 friends around them taking up chairs and space. Staff were often obstructed by the volumes of people so cut it down . At 10.30 am a totally incapable -through drink or drugs or both - man arrived and was a complete and utter nuisance to all many of whom were in pain or distress. Security did not seem to be called as he staggered and shouted round A & E. Hospital chiefs need to get a grip to ease this chaos of people lying on corridor floors.

Oldswint, I’ve noted that myself and commented about it on here in the past. Whole families accompany one patient, who has not much wrong with them.
As for that ‘drink or drugs or both’ shouter, over here, in Catalunya, he’d be beaten with sticks by the local Mossos. It follows, then, that they don’t get that sort of behaviour in their hospitals.
The other day, when I was at A&E over here, the place was empty, apart from me and grandson.
Why is it, then, that Wigan hospital A&E is often full to bursting?

Tonks you should know most of the patients at A&E cannot get to see a GP and may have to wait weeks to have any contact with one. This has been going on for years well before the pandemic, Our doctors is open 8till6 Mon to Fri except Weds when it is shut at 1. So don't be ill on Weds aft any evening or w/ends

my partner had a gp appointment yesterday at 10am.She came out with a letter telling her to go A&E at Preston because of her deteriorating health.I walked her in and booked her in.The place as packed so i left her there. At 8 at night she rang to pick her up as the doctor told her she would have to sleep in a chair in the corridor. He said he would put her problems through to the GP .She got a call from the doctors this morning saying they had booked a phone appointment for next thursday.the whole of the health service is dead in the water

I bet those who come over on the dinghies don't have to wait to see a doctor

Quite right Peter. The consultant who saw her in A&E said she needed to be referred to the diabetic clinic to change her insulin as the present one isn't suitable and she gets a phone call from GP in a weeks time.Diabolical.

Peter, all those who are in the Ibis Hotel, on the east lancs road, in Haydock, were seen queueing together at Haydock Health Centre a few weeks ago. I put it on here.
It’s likely that they’ll get the appointments first, before the locals!

Peterp I hope your wife has been sorted by now. Such a stressful situation for you. The Tories are not interested in helping our NHS.

PeteP

The fact that some surgeries are not open on a Wednesday afternoon may not mean that the surgery is closed as it may be used for anti natal classes and other things.

Katpressey

No matter what party is in power, the NHS is facing an uphill battle to provide a service of what it should as a result of the ever increasing population and major changes in volving more use of the private sector if it is to remain a free NHS.

Only those still living in 1947 when the population was only around 38 million think otherwise!

OC there are probably baby /clinics but that only covers a small % of the people who may need to see a doctor. I know that when the surgery is closed you phone up and you call is diverted to another doctors who may see you .I have used this myself when I have needed a doctor over the week end for the wife. Tonks maybe its time they had a separate unit for drunks/druggies at hospitals to cut down on the idiots running round the hospital and causing mayhem.
